Meet my mom, Bernalin.

What I admire most about her is…

My mother, Bernalin is the most loving and self-less person I know. As a critical care nurse, she gives care and kindness to absolute strangers day in and day out. She keeps her coworkers in high spirits by frequently organizing mini-celebrations for the whole unit. She gives back to her family and community in the Philippines by managing a scholarship fund to high-achieving underprivileged students every year and sending boxes of necessities and treats every month. As a mom, she is the glue to our family and is a constant example of living with love and forgiveness. When I think about caring for others, my mommy is my north star.

My favorite thing to do with her is…

My mom loves to bake. She makes several different iterations of each recipe to create the ultimate best version. I love tasting her baked goods with her with a glass of wine and simply celebrating how delicious it was and the work she put into it and chatting about life.

Ways we are most similar…

My mom and I are very strong-minded in our values, and I totally get that from her. I always admired how strong and loving she can be at the same time.

Ways we are most different…

I love the beach. I love swimming in big salty water and sitting in the sun. My mom could care less. She grew up near the beach in the Philippines and even there it was never her thing. Bummer for family vacays.

I think our mother-daughter relationship is so special because…

I left home at 13 years old to go to boarding school.  We missed out on a lot of time together with me away at school. All the same, we have a solid mother-daughter closeness that we both really cherish, probably more so because we missed out on time earlier on. As much as I’ve grown and our relationship has evolved, she’s always known me better than I’ve known myself.

Meet my daughter, Marlin.

What I admire most about her…

Her intelligence.

My favorite thing to do with her…

I enjoy going out to eat with her.

Ways we are most similar …

We won’t deal with abusive people.

Ways we are most different…

Marlin can express herself better.

I think our mother-daughter relationship is so special because…

We love and respect each other.
