Meet my mom, Rasha.

What I admire most about her is…

My mother is an incredible force of nature. She sets her sights on something and goes after it with everything she has. Even though she is incredibly busy between her work, being the Vice President of the school board, being on the board of ACCESS (Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services) and the Governor of Michigan’s Civil Rights Commission, she still has endless energy and passion.

My mom is wise, warm, generous, and elegant. I wake up every morning and try to be a little bit more like my mom.

My favorite thing to do with her is…

My favorite memories with my mom usually involve helping her in the kitchen. She is an incredible chef and entertains often. I, unfortunately, am not as skilled in the kitchen but I do whatever I can to help her. While in the kitchen, we talk about anything and everything and its these conversations I enjoy so much. I learn so much from her everyday.

Ways we are most similar…

We have very similar temperaments and personalities generally. The way we experience and express emotions as well has how we approach problems. We have similar senses of humor and also agree on a lot of things, both politically and socially.

Ways we are most different…

My mom will laugh – but she is certainly a lot more popular than I am! She has more friends than I could ever dream of having. And they are mostly friendships she has had for 30-40 years! My mom also has a more refined taste in the arts and an ear for languages (she is fluent in three languages).

I think our mother-daughter relationship is so special because…

My mom is the most important person in my life. Her opinions matter most to me and what I love most, is that we get closer every day.

Meet my daughter, Sarra.

What I admire most about her…

I love her beautiful sunny and positive personality, her witty sense of humor and her deep analytical mind. She is a loving, caring and thoughtful child. I love her forthcoming sense of adventure and how she is willing to push herself out of her comfort zone. I have learned so much from Sarra and that makes me proud.

My favorite thing to do with her…

Having deep political discussions as well as shopping.

Ways we are most similar …

We have very similar views.

Ways we are most different…

Can’t think of anything.

I think our mother-daughter relationship is so special because…

The mutual respect and trust we have for each other. I am so proud of her!!
